Ideas similiar to Sri Aurobindo's teaching about divinisation of matter, were very popular in Oriental (Byzantine and Russian) Christianty (theosis/theiosis) Some Russian religious philosophers of around the turn of the 20th century were extremely fond of the idea of divinization of matter, the world of perfect God-Men, etc. Vladimir Solovyev (died in 1900) was the most famous representative of this trend of mystical thought (it is interesting also that he was a great admirer of Kabbalah and Gnosticism).
