Intersubjective Stages of Transformation
"Worldcentric"/ Pluralistic/Holistic

The Egocentric or Selfish stage

The Egocentric or Selfish stage is not a stage of evolution of consciousness, but a degenerate (minus minus or lower left in the Co-Action Compass diagram) stage of both humanity as a whole and individuals and groups as instruments for adverse forces that seek to destroy everything that is beautiful in the cosmos. Ken Wilber refers to this as the egocentric or "me" stage, which is identified with the body, and this does indeed reflect the superficiality of modern culture, but it can obviously also be equally identified with emotions and thoughts as well; it doesn't have to be just physical. Those who embody this consciousness are able to do so because they lack or reject empathy and embrace narcissism, greed, and selfishness, and thus allow themselves to be instruments of adverse forces.

Included here are unregulated capitalism (see critiques by Michael Moore and David Korten), imperialism, jingoism, totalitarianism, authoritarianism, tribalism, cults, gangs, terrorist organisations, etc etc; which represent the society that has to be transformed. David Korten refers to Imperial Consciousness: Power Seekers live in their own world, play up to the powerful, and exploit the oppressed. These corerspond to the Egocentric stage on the collectively and social level.

On a global scale we have the current situation, the world as a place of suffering and injustice due to the actions of those in power. Accelerating destruction of ecosystems, mass extinction, human survivors eking out a miserable existence, peak oil, no second industrial revolution, out with a whimper, not a bang. In the larger physical universe: entropy, meaninglessness, the universe tending inexorably to heat death; the world and the cosmos that has to be transformed.

In the Egocentric/Selfish Stage the influence of the adverse forces are dominant, although there is still a glimmer of the higher influences. Thus it is not totally bad. As with everuything, it has some purpose. But ultimately it has to be transmuted, and its transmutation is the spiritual path.
