Meher Baba is considered by those who know him to be more than "enlightened"
in the conventional sense. He is claimed to be not merely a Sadguru
(a Man-God or one who attains to God-realizaton), but a Jagat Guru
(God-Man, or one who "descends" from the sanskrit ava-tri, "to go
down"). His vidnyani sanskaras provided a veil until Hazrat

India, circa 1915, thereby unveiling his divinity which was already in
I would point out that similiar claims have been made by Da Free John (Adidam) and Sathya Sai Baba. Guru Maharaji likewise claimed when younger to be an avatar (he has dropped this title as he grew older, and ended up marrying his secretary). We have so many claiming to be the avatar of this age! Speaking subjectively I do get a strong feeling that individuals like Meher Baba, Sai Baba, and Sri Aurobindo are 100% genuine, whereas others like Adidam, although saying much of great wisdom, cannot really be considered an avatar, although they may indeed be an Enlightened Being.
